Christmas Island

Christmas Island – 1994. We arrived on Christmas day and stayed at the Christmas Island Resort and Casino for a week. We rented a car and spent some time exploring the island (there is not a lot to see), went diving one day and spent the rest of the time at the beach or by the resort pool. Christmas Island, an Australian Territory in the Indian Ocean north-west of Perth, Western Australia.
We arrived on December 25th and this is the guy meeting us at the Christmas Island immigration.

We climbed up to the top of a hill and the dots on the water are boats.

The roots on these trees were amazing.
The rainy season was late coming so the waterfall was almost dry.
I thought that this was a very unusual tree.

The waves have worn holes though the soft volcanic rock on the shore and the waves come up from underneath to create some spectacular blow holes.

This is a few of the 100 million red crabs that live on Christmas Island
A few more crabs. Unfortunately they are uneatable. Also, they are very crunchy on the roads when they do their annual migration from the forest to the sea.
The rains were late this year so the “rain forest” was very dry.
Another red crab. This one is in the forest and is trying to figure out where the ocean is. If it crosses the road it will probably get squashed and if it tries…
There were only a few beaches on Christmas Island but all the ones we saw were lovely.

Because this was originally a volcanic island the coast is very rugged
